At Rockland Farm, in conjunction with Blueberry Ridge Dressage, we believe that the basics of horsemanship help form the proper foundation needed for riders to succeed in the horse world. We build riders with strong foundations they will be able to use for the rest of their lives, no matter what discipline they choose.

We are happy to offer several riding programs on one of our safe and friendly lesson horses or your own horse. Our trainer, Heather Sweeney, specializes in dressage but welcomes all breeds and disciplines. A correct foundation and good riding can be taken in any direction. We start most of our riders with seat lessons on the lunge line to work on balance and proper position, or to take a step back to address weak points for our more advanced riders.

We welcome riders from ages 4 years and up, at all skill levels. Whether you have never sat on a horse before, or want to compete, everyone is welcome to come ride and enjoy the fun, relaxed environment. Focusing on the riders’ safety and the horses’ well being; helping to create a great partnership with your equine friend.

Our Lesson Format

Students are expected to arrive 30 minutes prior to lesson to catch their horse, groom and tack up, classes for Tiny Tots and Learn to Ride do not require early arrival. Students should be in the ring, mounted and ready to ride, at the scheduled start of their lesson (private lessons should mount 15 min early to warm up once approved by their instructor). After the lesson, students are expected to properly cool out and groom their horse before putting them away. Students are also expected to clean their tack and properly put it away before leaving. Overall, it will take approximately 1-2 hours for a riding lesson. Learn to Ride classes are a total of one hour and arriving early will be required once in a regular lesson program.

An assessment lesson may be required for each new rider to ensure proper placement in groups based on current skill levels. In the interest of the well being of the horses, lesson content will always be subject to the discretion of the instructor/riding school.

We offer lessons for those wanting to enjoy horses and learn (non-competition, beginner riders) and for those wanting to train for a higher performance and/or competition. For those looking for high performance/competition please inquire for full details. Any rider wanting to compete will be required to own or have a lease horse.

Rider Turnout

All riders are required to have the following gear:

  • Correctly fitted ASTM helmet (helmets available on site for use until own is purchased, recommend purchasing own)
  • Boots with a 1/2" - 1" heel
  • Long pants for riding (we suggest breeches or snug fitting pants)
  • Gloves (optional but highly recommended)

We do recommend English riders wear paddock boots with half chaps or tall boots, or cowboy boots for Western Riders. Long hair must be tied back neatly or tucked into helmet with hairnet.

When fitting a helmet please remember the following key points:

The rim of the helmet should be one to two finger widths above the eye. The straps of the ears should form a V just beneath the ear lobe. When a rider opens his mouth, the buckle should feel snug on the chin and the helmet should hug the head. If it is a new helmet it should be slightly tight as the padding does loosen after some time.

LESSON RATE CHANGE EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2023

For School Horse lessons, sometimes the horse will be used before or after your scheduled lesson and may not need to be groomed/tacked prior or after your lesson.
